Program Description

Please note the Public Health Nurse Ready and Foundation of Public Health Certificate programs will no longer be provided after 6/30/23.  We will process applications received by 6/30/23.  The final certificates will be issued early to mid-July 2023.

The individual courses will remain available.

Come back in (August/Sept) to learn more about our new Public Health Foundations Certificate.  This new certificate program combines courses from the former Public Health Nurse Ready and Foundations of Public Health certificate programs.

Please e-mail coned@albany.edu with any questions.

Public Health Nurse Ready (PHN Ready) is a free online certificate program for RNs working in public health, or desiring to know about how public health works. LPNs may find the certificate of interest as well.  All courses are self‐paced and online. It does not offer academic credit, however, many of the courses provide continuing education credits.

The courses in this certificate provide a foundation of core public health concepts and practices. Topics include: cultural competency, public health literacy, program evaluation, basic epidemiology, core functions and essential services of public health. These courses reflect the core public health competencies set forth by the Quad Council of Public Health Nursing Organizations.

To earn the PHN Ready Certificate:

  1. Download the course tracking sheet.
  2. Create an account at phtc-online.org, enroll and complete all of the required courses.
  3. Once you have finished all required coursework, you must complete the "PHN Ready Request for Certificate" certificate request survey.

***Certificate requests are processed the 1st week of the month. Please plan your submission accordingly.***
