Sanitary survey courses provide basic formal competency training for environmental health staff who are, or will be, engaged in public water supply (PWS) work. Using lectures, demonstrations, and field exercises, the courses provide instruction in the practical application of public water principles and regulations to identify violations and risk factors during field visits. There are two separate courses, with the first one (applicable to ground water systems) being a prerequisite for the second (applicable to surface water systems).
Sanitary Surveys of Surface Water Systems (2 days)
Prerequisite: completion of the ground water sanitary survey course
- For all engineers; and other individuals who are likely to work with surface water systems.
- The field exercise and material cover surface water sources and water quality concerns, filtration and related treatment processes, turbidity, compliance with related rules (e.g. surface water treatment, disinfection byproducts), and operation and reporting related to filtration plants.
- Intended primarily for staff described above who are actively engaged in work with community and non-transient PWS with surface water sources, and who have not taken a surface water course previously.
