Course Description

The SALT Mass Casualty Triage Train-the-Trainer Program is an intensive, instructor-level course designed to prepare qualified responders, educators, and emergency management professionals to effectively teach and implement the SALT (Sort, Assess, Lifesaving Interventions, Treatment/Transport) triage methodology. This program builds both subject-matter expertise and instructional competence, ensuring participants can confidently deliver high-quality SALT triage training within their agencies, healthcare systems, or regional preparedness networks.

Through a combination of interactive lectures, scenario-based learning, skills demonstration, and peer-teaching exercises, participants gain a deep understanding of SALT’s evidence-based approach to mass casualty triage and its application across diverse incident types. The course emphasizes consistency in patient categorization, rapid lifesaving interventions, responder safety, and coordination across multidisciplinary response teams.

Participants also learn best practices for adult learning, course facilitation, and evaluation methods to maintain instructional quality. Upon completion, trainers will be equipped with the curriculum materials, teaching strategies, and evaluation tools necessary to deliver standardized SALT Triage courses and support agency-wide adoption.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Master the SALT triage framework and its operational application in mass casualty incidents

  • Perform SALT triage steps accurately under time-compressed and high-stress conditions

  • Deliver effective classroom and hands-on SALT triage instruction to responders at varying skill levels

  • Utilize instructor resources, job aids, and evaluation tools to support consistent competency development

  • Facilitate scenario-based exercises and provide constructive feedback to learners

  • Support agency or regional implementation of SALT triage as part of broader MCI response plans

This train-the-trainer program is ideal for EMS educators, emergency managers, healthcare preparedness professionals, fire/EMS officers, and other response leaders responsible for training or operational readiness.
