Course Description

The purpose of this training is to enhance the capacity of local health department staff to conduct public health detailing to dental providers about alternative acute pain management strategies and opioid prescribing. The training will feature presentations from Dr. Tom Viola on the clinical components and Cicatelli Associates, Inc. on the public health detailing approach. 

Learning Outcome: 

After completing this activity, the learner will expand their competence on utilizing public health detailing to address opioid prescribing in the dental setting for acute pain management.  

Learning Objectives: 

After participating in the training, attendees will be able to:  

  1. Assess change readiness with dental practices for implementing dental opioid recommendations. 

  1. Describe the epidemiology behind opioid prescribing. 

  1. Discuss current guidelines and best-practices for prescribing for dental pain. 

  1. Compose messages for building dentist “buy in” to change opioid prescription practices.
