Course Title:

Retention and Mentoring Across Generations

Part II: Intergenerational Communication in LHDs

Course Duration: 1.5 Hr.

Course Description:

The public health workforce is older than the general population. As new hires have been brought into health departments through programs like Public Health AmeriCorps, Public Health Infrastructure Grants, the New York State Public Health Corps Fellows Program and other programs, improving communication between generations has become even more important. Learn how to improve communication and understanding between generations to improve your workplace culture.

Course Objectives:

  1. Describe each of the generations currently working in the public health workforce and how their values and communication styles may differ.
  2. Evaluate your health department’s culture (communication styles, organizational structure) and how it might adapt to ensure inclusion of different generations.
  3. List at least one way you can improve your communication between different generations.
