Course Description

Basic formal competency training for environmental health staff engaged in public water supply (PWS) work. Using lectures, demonstrations, and field exercises, courses provide instruction in the practical application of public water principles and regulations to identify violations and risk factors during field visits. Two separate courses: the first (for ground water systems) is a prerequisite for the second (for surface water systems).

Sanitary Surveys of Ground Water Systems (2 days)

• For all individuals who expect regular work assignments involving PWS systems, including transient non-community systems such as those at permitted facilities. This includes ALL engineers, and other staff involved in public water supply work (sanitarians, public health inspectors, technicians, etc.).
• The field exercise and material cover general aspects of non-community and community water supply regulations, all aspects of ground water sources and treatment, and distribution systems.

Intended primarily for staff actively involved in the water work described above, and who have not taken a course previously. The course has limited applicability for individual (residential) water supply programs.

Prerequisite: completion of the Concepts of Water Supply Protection module of the Basic Environmental Health Program (course EH 109) is expected; alternatively, signficant mentored training & field experience in public water supply programs.
