In October 2015, the New York State Department of Health, Division of Chronic Disease Prevention initiated a five-year public health initiative to address obesity, diabetes, and other chronic diseases in high-need schools and communities around the state. Creating Healthy Schools and Communities (CHSC) funds 25 grantees to implement multi-component evidence-based poli­cies, place-based strategies, and promising practices to increase demand for and access to healthy, affordable foods and opportunities for daily physical activity for all New Yorkers.

The New York State Obesity Prevention Center for Excellence (OPCE) is the resource and support center for Creating Healthy Schools and Communities grantees and their community partners. The mission of OPCE is to strengthen the collective impact of the 25 CHSC grantees by increasing access to healthy foods and opportunities for physical activity. To achieve this mission, OPCE provides training and technical assistance to CHSC grantees and partners. OPCE is led by JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc., in partnership with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, PedNet Coalition, Sasaki Associates Inc., and the University of Rochester Medical Center Department of Pediatrics. This webinar will provide an overview of OPCE and the resources and tools available through its website.

Learning Objectives
After viewing this presentation participants will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose and role of the NYSOPCE in supporting the work of CHSC grantees;
  • Identify relevant healthy eating and physical activity resources and training opportunities to support CHSC grantees, and DOH partners and stakeholders, as well as other state and local agencies; and
  • Identify opportunities to collaborate with or support CHSC grantees and the OPCE.
